Applications Open for the Ismael "Mayo" de la Rocha Scholarship for Undergraduate CHST Students

The Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies is now accepting applications for the Ismael "Mayo" de la Rocha Scholarship. UCSB Alumnus Cástulo de la Rocha ('73) and his wife, Zoila Escobar, established this scholarship to memorialize the legacy of Cástulo's cousin, Ismael "Mayo" de la Rocha (B.A. History, 1973). During his time at UC Santa Barbara, Mayo was a student activist leader who played a major role in the founding of the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies. He then dedicated his life and career to the advancement of these principles, as an educator and community leader.  Mayo taught Chicana/o Studies and History at Ventura College for 40 years.

Mayo de la Rocha passed away on August 15, 2015. The Ismael "Mayo" de la Rocha Scholarship pays tribute to Mayo's dedication and commitment to the Chicana/o/x community. This scholarship aims to keep Mayo's legacy alive by supporting students from working-class backgrounds who wish to further their education in Chicana/o/x Studies at UCSB.
