On April 6th, the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department hosted Thelma Cabrera during a talk with two professors in the department.
About the Event:
Thelma Cabrera (Maya Mam) is a human and indigenous rights defender and the 2019 presidential candidate for the Movement for the Liberation of Peoples. Cabrera has been prevented in running for the 2023 presidential election, a move which has been viewed by national and international observers as politically motivated. Her virtual talk discusses the Guatemalan elections, and the political and social situation in the country. The Virtual Foro was moderated by Dr. Giovanni Batz, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chicana/o Studies, and Dr. Ralph Armbuster Sandoval, Professor in the Department of Chicana/o Studies. The talk will be in Spanish with English translation.

Thelma Cabrera (Maya Mam) es defensora de los derechos humanos e indígenas y candidata presidencial de 2019 por el Movimiento de Liberación de los Pueblos. Cabrera se le ha impedido postularse para las elecciones presidenciales de 2023, una medida que los observadores nacionales e internacionales han visto como motivada políticamente. Su platica virtual tratará sobre las elecciones guatemaltecas y la situación política y social del país.
